Caregiver Burden

Stroke rehabilitation has moved away from institutionalization and more toward patient-focused rehabilitation at home creating a spike in the number of stroke patients being cared for at home and therefore an increased role of caregivers. The American Heart Association describes caregiver burnout as long-term stress that arises from constantly trying to meet the needs of the caregiver role. This burnout can affect the way the caregiver cares for themselves as well as the stroke survivor.
